Mark Wicks and Woods Racing started their World Championship campaigns in the best possible way by bagging pole position, fastest lap and victory in an accident-ridden Australian Grand Prix. The Cornish driver never looked in danger of conceding the win, and with his main rival, Adam Rouse, let down at the start by his APR the race looked just a formality for the young star.
The start of the season offers often races full of incidents, and the 2008 Australian Grand Prix was not a disappointment on this point of view. Among the casualties were prestigious names such as Scott Whiteman and Daniel Bolman, both falling victim of a pit stop mistakes by their Nordsjoen and Vod:Bul teams.
With Wicks setting his pace to achieve his maiden win, a feisty fight started for the other two steps of the podium. In the end, Romanian debutant Laurentiu Albu got the best of Mal McKee and William Ponissi: the last two fighting until the last lap in a duel reminiscent of 2002 - incidentally, a season in which also Mark Wicks saw on-track action with CVRT.
The last of the survivors of the Melbourne carnage was Michelangelo Manrique - the Spaniard arriving 5th on his PM, while among the retirees are Juha Tanskanen, Martijn Vosselman and Philip Cullen.
The GPVWC now moves to Malaysia for round 2 of the Grand Prix 4 Championship - The procedure for Free Practice follows the same guidelines used in the Australian GP Practice. However, the new files are necessary: you can download them HERE. Deadline is midnight GMT of Tuesday, April 22nd.
