With the next Superleague Grand Prix scheduled for September 3rd, rumours are starting to circulate regarding whether the race will actually take place in the allocated track, the Laguna Seca raceway.
A panel of drivers has recently expressed doubts about the suitability of the track for the Superleague cars, and put forward a list of improvements the circuit would need. With such a short time before the Grand Prix, and reported economic troubles engulfing the organisers, the future of the race looks at risk.
GPVWC Admin William Ponissi is rumoured to be about to fly to the United States to have a meeting with the track owners to discuss the possible outcomes. His schedule will involve a series of high-profile meetings with organisers and sponsors in New York and Washington.
Rumours are rife, however, also regarding a possible replacement should Laguna Seca prove unsuited to the Superleague. Detroit is one of the names being circulated, but the fact that Ponissi is flying to Canada soon after the last meeting in New York leads to believe the F1 favourite of Montreal will get the nod.
"Montreal has welcomed the GPVWC in an excellent manner in the past," said a source in the GPVWC Administration, "and there are very good chances the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will host a race in 2009."
