The Spanish Grand Prix will signify a moving milestone for veteran driver Mark Wicks. Since his first race at Silverstone back in 2002 Wicks has racked up the miles and started event after event. After a three year hiatus for study his name has rarely been absent from the GPVWC grid, since late-2005 when he joined Woods Racing, having driven in all but a dozen races held in the last 6 seasons.

After 6 years together Wicks and Woods remain the longest serving driver-team partnership in league history. By seasons end they will have notched up 98 events together in the top level competition. But currently Wicks’ personal record stands at 99 Grands Prix contested, meaning the Spanish Grand Prix will be the 100th race start of a 10 year career that has seen him win 5 races, score 28 podiums and claim two championship runner-up medals. Only 1 other driver has competed in more races so Wicks will become the league’s 2nd ever centenarian in its 12 year history.

After a tough season so far, and two recent opening lap retirements, Wicks hopes the significance of his 100th start and its celebration be a turning point for him and his teams current struggles.

“I just want a fun race, a competitive performance and a decent result: where I come away feeling I just couldn’t have done any better. That’s all I want from the race. It’s been such a tough year after two fabulous seasons, and the last seven races in particular have been most dire, one of the worst stints of my career. I want turning 100 to be a sort of re-birth. I want to be back at the front and feel comfortable in my car. It all starts again from here. Here’s to the next 100!”
