With the recent League Admin announcement, that Kernow Sport had been granted the 12th team slot for the 2012 Superleague season, Team Manager Mark Wicks was undoubtedly over the moon. It signals the first step taken for the veteran driver into top-tier management. Already having several Masters seasons and one Supercup campaign sat on the pit-wall under his belt, he’s grateful for the opportunity now offered him to try and reach the pinnacle of GPVWC in a new way.

Hailing from St. Austell in central Cornwall, Kernow Sport will aim to bring the counties true name and colours to the viewing public across the virtual racing world in a way that promotes gentlemanly sporting conduct, loyalty, reliability and a sentiment to never give up mixed with verve to educate fans about Cornwall. “We like to consider ourselves a thinking team. We try to reign in on the brash behaviour; red mist is not our thing. By sitting back and assessing we believe we can push the right envelopes at the right time, to strike at the opportune moments like a wily old fox in order to build a team and car that our drivers can use to score points and wins with.”

With the mention of drivers interest turns to the line-up Kernow Sport will field in 2012. “It depends on a lot to be honest. Which simulation to be used, what physics to be used and of course which drivers are available. We’ve already had several names interested (and several others have been approached to assess their market availability) in putting their names onto the shortlist, some of them very good drivers which immediately fills the team with confidence. If there are any other drivers out there who wish to be considered for a team seat they should make themselves known via PM on the forum or via email. We will be taking consideration of applicants for several roles. There is a race seat to be hotly contested for, along with reserve/test seats. Also we are looking for a driver to partner Wopke Hoekstra in the Supercup class.

“We’re not in any rush to decide on the full line-up. Around the New Year is when I’d like contracts finalised and signed but I will probably have a good idea of who exactly I want several weeks before that. And when they are signed I expect my drivers to stay committed, be utterly reliable, drive consistently and behave in a respectful manner at all times on and off track.”

The team is clearly looking forward to 2012. Though the off season will have plenty to play for which will shape the approaching new season for the team. The hiring of important team personnel to assist Wicks and build a quick car will be the first step on the road. Along with acquiring a good engine and securing worthy sponsors the teams’ outlook and aspirations for 2012 will be set.
