The first fifth of the season has been a worrying time for Synergetic Motorsports in the Superleague. The team has been blessed with some of the most talented drivers in the last couple of years, only to slip back in the Championship rankings. Partly this is due, undoubtedly, to an influx of new and fast drivers. A major part has been down to pure bad luck, however.

Synergetic, so far this season, have had problems developing the car and have only finished a mere 25% of races entered, scoring once.

Synergetic owner/manager Mal McKee has been disappointed with driver Liam Hatchell. "Only because I have been witness to such a great talent, and he has not been able to quite get things together to really mount a campaign and make his true mark on the league, right at the top where he belongs. I felt a similar feeling with Sam [Millar], with it being so frustrating that all that speed and ability never saw a return in terms of points and a truly reflective championship position," McKee told the press conference this morning.

Hatchell has had his share of problems which were beyond his control, over the past couple of years, and more than enough bad luck in this year's Superleague races. "Being taken out at the very start of a grand prix is probably the worst and most frustrating thing a driver can experience. Liam hasn't been enjoying it as much as he'd hoped. Nor has he been able to get himself back up to speed as quickly as he'd have liked, after a hiatus last year," said McKee, continuing, "I know Liam had been genuinely enthusiastic about this season, but he is a realist, and his decision to step down impresses me. It highlights the maturity and level of experience that I always knew he had. He made the call at the right time, too, after giving it enough time to see if a difference could be made."

Synergetic confirmed the driver's status as a test driver, with Mal saying, "I'm hoping he can make himself available, if necessary, for any races during the season if a driver drops out of an event. It might not be the last time we see Liam in a Superleague car this season - I can't say for sure. He will be invaluable to us as in a testing role anyway, I have no doubt."

Bookies are taking bets now as to which of the team's test/reserve drivers will be filling Liam's boots in the car, as Mal wouldn't be drawn on speculation just yet.

As for the teams continuing woes, the managing partnership of McKee and Ojay Clark insist that the Spanish Grand Prix, and the subsequent racing events, will see a revitalised Synergetic, and a team which is capable and can roll with the punches.
