Midnight Motorsport ace Lukas Euler took his eighth win of the season at Spa, helping the team seal their first ever GPVWC Superleague Constructors Championship. Dave Carr-Smith finished second, and Jamez Shepherd finished in third.
The ever iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium was the latest venue for the 2012 Superleague paddock, and all eyes were firmly on the dominant Midnight Motorsport team. With the possibility of wrapping up the Constructors Championship as early as Round Twelve, and with only Draig Racing possibly able to delay the seemingly inevitable by scoring seventeen points more than Midnight, it seemed only a matter of when, not if.
As we move well into the second half of the season, some team shuffling has taken place at a couple of different teams. The biggest overhaul between Monza and Spa has without doubt taken place at Welsh sim-racing outfit Draig Racing. With the news regular frontrunner Lee Morris has stepped down from driving duties for the rest of the season, and with no sign of his now former teammate Keith Storrie at Spa, Draig revealed a completely new line-up in Belgium. Kenney Lybeer, who appeared in Supercup a number of times last season, would make his Superleague debut at his home grand prix, and Dale Carrick would partner him. Dale has already made one appearance for Draig this season, retiring from his first race at Hungary. Whether this will be the finalised line-up for the rest of the season remains to be seen. Nordsjoen Racing have finally been provided some much needed stability, with reigning Supercup champion Bart De Vos joining the team, alongside team regular Pavel Loknovski. Mark Wicks run of races entered in finally came to an end, after stating he would be unavailable to race for Kernow Sport in Spa. In slightly less surprising news, Ruud Heesterbeek returned to the cockpit for Nijo Racing after a planned one race absence, and would no doubt continue to help the team towards a top six Constructors Championship finish.
Moving to Qualifying, nobody could end championship leader Lukas Euler's dominance in one-lap trim, making it an unprecedented twelve straight pole positions in a row. James Shepherd was his closest challenger for Hawkeye Racing, lining up alongside on the front row. Ojay Clark took third for Red Archer VT, ahead of Nick Rowland and Dave Carr-Smith. Ruud Heesterbeek lined up sixth, ahead of David Jundt, debutant Kenney Lybeer, Bart De Vos and Tom Parker, who rounded out the top ten. Both Synergetic Motorsport cars did arrive in Belgium and appeared ready to race, but seemingly a last minute change of heart meant both Wesley Morris and Daniel Lovett did not take part in the Qualifying session, and did not line up on the grid for the race. What the future is for the struggling Northern Irish outfit, at least in Superleague, remains to be seen.
In what looked to be one of the most competitive races for a while, Euler, Carr-Smith and Shepherd wereseparated by a matter of seconds, before a tangle between the Green Stripes Racing car and the Hawkeye Racing car allowed Euler to get away, and take his eight win of the season, which was enough to see Midnight Motorsport crowned the GPVWC Superleague Constructors Champions for the 2012 season, still with six races to go, an unbelievable achievement. Carr-Smith was disappointed with second place, and felt like he could have challenged Euler for the win without the incident, but still took another excellent finish for Green Stripes Racing. Shepherd finished close behind in third place, giving him his third podium finish in just five races.Ojay Clark recovered from a disappointing Monza outcome to come home in fourth for Red Archer, after another enthralling almost race long battle with Heesterbeek, who came home fifth. Tom Parker was delighted with sixth place after making his two-stop strategy work. Bart De Vos finished in seventh in his first race for Nordsjoen Racing, despite an incident near the end of the race between himself and David Jundt, who after looking good for a solid points finish, was forced into retirement with just four laps of the race left. This elevated Dale Carrick into eighth place, recording Draig Racing's first points finish, and first non-retirement since Turkey. David Stanton did a great job for Constant Racing, finishing in ninth place, recording his second points finish of the season as Constant look to chase down the defunct Red 5 Racing for that final top ten Constructors Championship spot. Kieran Ryan took home the final point in tenth for Woods Racing. It was a disastrous weekend for Nick Rowland, who was caught up in a squabble at the beginning of the race, dropping him right to the back of the field, and one lap down. The Englishman recovered to eleventh place, just missing out on points.
With Rowland's misfortune, his teammate Lukas Euler is able to extend his championship lead totwenty-three points, leaving Rowland with a tough task ahead of him to catch back up. The now retired Lee Morris drops to fourth after Carr-Smith leaps ahead of him thanks to his second place finish. Shepherd's podium sees him switch places with Heesterbeek, and are now fifth and sixth respectively. Despite retiring from the last race, Simon Cattell remains in seventh for Kernow Sport, ahead of the retired Consiglio and Tanskanen pair. Ojay Clark now rounds out the top ten, but will have eyes on the positions ahead of him. In the Constructors, Midnight Motorsport's staggering 184 point lead is more than enough to see them crowned the 2012 Constructors champions, an unbelievableachievement, especially considering there are still six races left to complete on the calendar.Draig Racing remain in second place on 91 points, but Green Stripes Racing are now just one point behind, and look odds on favourites to claim that spot, sooner rather than later. Nordsjoen Racing's first points finish since Turkey sees them hanging onto fourth place, but are now sharing the position with Red Archer VT. If De Vos and Loknovski can start to take home regular points finishes, this could be a titanic scrap for the rest of the season. Nijo Racing remain in sixth, but with Jamez Shepherd scoring podiums at a canter for Hawkeye Racing, this is another battle that could last until the end of the season. Kernow Sport are in eighth, but with Woods Racing really starting to hit their stride, with five points finishes between Parker and Ryan out of six possible attempts in these last three races, they'll need to keep looking over their shoulders.
