The Woods Racing garage was the setting of a party last night as the team celebrated their first ever pole position. Unfortunately it was with some controversy, as immediately afterwards some rivals showed their disgust at Woods's signing of a top driver, Philip Williams, for just one race, allegedly in order to skip the huge costs of a more permanent deal. We caught up with Oliver Woods, team manager, in between his 5th and 6th 2-litre bottles of Pepsi Twist. He gave us this statement:

"Woods Racing will not be commenting on the situation, other than to say that there was no way we signed Philip for one race so we had a cheap top driver. However, I will say that I am very proud of Philip - to do that with less power than the top guns and in front of the home crowd is amazing. I do wish we could hold on to him for longer, but it's not going to happen unfortunately. Still, we think our strategy could be good enough to take a historic first win, but we'll have to see."

And what did Woods think of Phil Perkins' effort, who could only manage 17th? "Phil is also new to the car, after back problems rendered him unable to complete all of his testing. I think he did a good job, considering the sudden influx of huge names to the league. I hope he can net us some prize money this time round." And with that Woods left us to drink another bottle of Pepsi Twist, intent on "being the first teenager to get p*ssed on cola and lemon".
