The American GT Cup is an event that was first held during the 2012 Winter GT Series season at Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach. One of only two events to make the jump from the Winter GT Series, for the 2013 World GT Series season the race was be held at Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen. Despite the change in track however, the American GT Cup had retained its status as the Series' season closer. Before the 2013 race, a 'Lap of Remembrance' was held to pay tribute to the Porsche Supercup driver, Sean Edwards, and ex-Marussia F1 test driver, Maria de Villota; both of whom had passed away in the week preceding the event. For 2014, the location of the event would once again move; this time to the Circuit of the Americas, Austin. Further changes included the loss of its place as the Series' season finale for the first time in World GT history and a running under the name of the '6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas'.
