Report

Race Weekend Format

Three races per 'round'. Consisting of three equal length races that last approximately 15 minutes set to an absolute lap total depending on track length. The starting grid for Race 1 will be decided by a 10 minute qualification session, the starting grid for Race 2 will be the finishing positions from Race 1 and the starting grid for Race 3 will be a reversed grid from a random position between 14-18. The race weekend schedule will be as follows:

  • Practice = 10 minutes
  • Qualifying = 10 minutes
  • Warm-Up = 5 minutes
  • Race 1 = 15 minutes
  • Race 2 = 15 minutes
  • Race 3 = 15 minutes

Series Changes

For 2012 the format of feature and sprint events has been scrapped for three equal length races.

Three car teams return for 2012 but team entry is limited to 13 in order to control grid size. Unlike last season race setups will be fully open.

The series schedule has been brought forward to an August start time in order for the series to be wrapped up in line with the rest of GPVWC's competitions although the Masters Series will still remain as the leagues finale for the year. The series will contain 19 races, the most in Masters series history. There will be 6 'normal' 3 race events as well as 1 feature length event that contains just a single race.

New for 2012 is the Novice Cup for which eligible drivers will be able to compete in a championship independant of the main series but they will be eligible to score for both. The Top 15 will score points in the main championship and the top 7 designated Novice Cup drivers will score points in their respective series.

Also new for 2012 is the introduction of success ballast, the Top 5 from races 1 & 2 at each event will carry weight ballast into the next race (1st place=40kg, 2nd=30kg, 3rd=20kg, 4th=10kg, 5th=5kg). Success ballast is not carried over to the next event and the feature length event will not be subject to it.

Season Summary

The Masters Series returned at an earlier calendar slot than previous years with a summer start on the 2nd of August, this was done in order to bring it in line with other GPVWC series finish dates.

The sixteen round championship was largely dominated by one driver, Dave Carr-Smith who cruised to the title with room to spare with an incredible 14 wins and two 2nd positions; in a series that has seen some dominating performances in its four year history this will go down as the most dominant thus far. The run of results included an incredible 13 wins in a row and 12 fastest laps and propelled his team Halcyon Racing to the constructors title, their first GPVWC title in its very first year.

The season was of course again action packed and Carr-Smith was pushed for victories by the likes of Lee Morris, Simon Cattell and Ruud Heesterbeek although only two other drivers managed to grace the top step of the podium. Erik Tveit took advantage of a rare Carr-Smith error which saw him collide with early leader Martin Schumacher at the Parabolica of Monza, taking the season opener; it was short lived success for Tveit who was not seen again in the series after Round 6. Simon Cattell salvaged a victory in the reverse grid race 3 at Monza, cruising from pole position to take the last victory of the season that didn't involved a black liveried Number 33.

Ruud Heesterbeek only entered the series at Curitiba but still put on an impressive run of results including five 2nd positions to secure himself 2nd overall in the drivers championship. David Jundt may have only stood on the podium once all season but his consistency and constant points finishes allowed him to take home 3rd overall, a feat he also managed in 2010.

Scott Bennett took home the Novice Cup title, a new sub championship aimed at allowing novice drivers to compete in their own points series alongside the main championship. Bennett turned im some brilliant drives to win the first four rounds of the Novice Cup as well as impressing with his overall race positions. He was however pushed all the way to the final rounds by the likes of Myles Dixon, William Tringas and Mark Fuller. The Novice Cup proved to be a success and created new winners at the GPVWC out of the likes of Bennett, Dixon, Keith Storrie, Glenn Guest and Teemu Toikka.

Halcyon Racing took home the team honours backed by the incredible Dave Carr-Smith and a rotation of team mates; Philip Cullen, Simon Melhuish, Nick Rowland and Ben Warren, team owner Adam Rouse had won his first title with his own name above his door. Innervision secured a highly creditable 2nd overall, especially given they lost 2011 champion Simon Cattell at the end of the halfway mark. Revolution Motorsport managed 3rd overall in their debut season, beating Tiger Express Motorsports by just a single point in a battle that went down to the very last corner of the very last race.

The season had seen 13 teams and 49 drivers participate, numbers slightly down on last years record turnout in main down to the restrictions in teams entered. None the less an incredible season had seen some glorious racing and allowed a different style of racing for many of those competing in the ongoing Supercup, Superleague and Formula Challenge seasons as well as several newcomers to the taste the GPVWC for the first time.
