Rumours have been circulating the F1 Paddock for several months now regarding Jan Kelder's future F1VWC plans. Today he released a statement to the press confirming his intentions post 2003 season.

Jan Kelder today announced his decision to retire from sim driving following a hard 15 races and plenty of testing duties. The man from Holland had the following to say:-

"The F1VWC season 2003 is coming to an end with only one race to go. For me it is time to reconsider my position within this excellent league!

As racing in GPx mode is only one of my hobbies, and other hobbies as on-line flight simulation and music (midi) had less attention last year, I decided to spend less time to the F1VWC races and to stop as a driver in this league.

I had a very good time in season 2003 and my decision to take a seat in the Phoenix F1 of Andy Graydon was one of the best, I did in my life. A very committed team owner, always on schedule and doing all thing good for the team.

When the GPVWC league collapsed, some people wanted to continue with the league, but there was one passionate man, who picked up all the work belonging to the leading of a league and with less experience in making a website he managed to do an excellent job. Without Andy Graydon this league should not have been there anymore, I am very sure of it.

I have to thank all the members, team owners, drivers of the league. I am thinking at the hard time in the mid season time, when only about 9 drivers competed in the races. Andy was able to motivate each driver and the league is surviving now, I am sure.

The retirement has nothing to do with my health or my old age. I still will take place behind the wheel in my free time, but I also want to use the joystick for flight simulation and the synthesizer for the midi music more in the near future, as I neglected that things in my free time last year. Of course I will follow all developments in this league, wishing everybody a good time here."

Phoenix F1 team boss Andy Graydon thanked Jan for his commitment and attention to detail throughout the year:-

"Definite highlights were the 3rd placed grid position at Monaco, and the podium (3rd) at the French Grand Prix", commented Andy after hearing the news. "Of course, this means that we now need to search for at least 1 driver for the 2004 season. Interested parties can contact me direct via e-mail or the F1VWC Forum. Of course, the team will be looking at a driver who can challenge for the 2004 Drivers Crown".
