The F1VWC comes to Indianapolis in probably its strongest position since the GPVWC folded. There should be 19, if not 20, cars on track in qualifying, and some very committed new teams have joined the fray. But the main talking point at Indy is - can Shiro Ryong sew up the Drivers title here, or will it go down to the last race at Suzuka in Japan?

Shiro only needs to finish ahead of Daniel Wilkinson to keep the EIRE driver out of the title battle. Shiro needs to gain two points on Mikko Jakonen to fend off the Mapes-VO driver. But the Indy track has traits which should suit the more powerful cars of Jakonen and Wilkinson, not least that long haul around the famed banking and across the "bricks" on the start/finish straight. Will Shiro Ryong be fighting for points at the lower reaches of the top 8? Perhaps qualifying will give an indication as to his true speed here.

Mapes-VO can also be crowned 2003 Constructors Champions if they are 18 points ahead of SCUM after the Indy race.

But of course, there is also the issue of reliability cropping up. Shiro's car has yet to fail him (although he also did not compete in Melbourne), whereas Jakonen and Wilkinson have had 2 non-finishes each this season because of car problems.

All very exciting as we reach the climax to the 2003 season!
