Phoenix F1's new test driver, F1VWC 2003 Drivers Championship Runner-Up Daniel Wilkinson, had his first drive Phoenix F1 machinery at bleak but dry Elvington Air Museum, near York.

Although limited to straight-line testing, Wilkinson seemed impressed with the build quality of the car.

Phoenix F1 brought their 2003 car, the PF1-01, to Elvington Air Museum (near York) for some systems checks and straight line speed tests. The airstrip, last used by Jaguar in 2001, provided Australian Daniel Wilkinson with his first taste of Phoenix machinery, having been signed up as the teams test driver for the 2004 season.

The Phoenix F1 livery was devoid of its usual sponsor array, perhaps a sign of new sponsorship deals coming through for 2004? Title sponsor Danka, engine supplier Renault, Shell fuel and Bridgestone tyres were the only logo's remaining on the car in its interim test format.

Team boss Andy Graydon was happy with the days work. "We are toying with the idea of heading to Barcelona for a private test session that Juan Tortella is arranging, so we want to take the opportunity to try out some of the new electronic systems on the car.

The bodywork remains the same as the 2003 car - we're not divulging too many secrets just yet! But it was nice to see Daniel's helmet plus an Australian flag and his name adorning the side of the car. I've known him for over 2 years now, having driven in the same team as him (BSR) way back in 2001! Let's just say that I'm a great admirer - and having failed to sign him up for the 2003 season, we at least have his experience to call on for 2004 in a test role".
