Intro:

Hello and welcome to follow Formula One Virtual World Championship series qualifying session, it's quite early in most European countries, but it's already 3 o'clock here local. Here in very sunny but not so hot Melbourne Australia. Just to remind you how qualifying is done this year, one lap qualifying with only one car on "hot"lap at the time. Every driver has specific slot to be on the track and after the lap is done driver will go back to pitlane and car will be in parc ferme where mechanics are not allowed to do any setup changes and other big repairs. Some small parts can be changed with approval from race directors, but the basic idea is to start the race with exactly same conditions than driver did his qualifying, but enough about the these rules, it's time to start the qualifying.

Lap around the track:

First car we see on the track is number 3, Mikko Jakonen driving in yellow-black Mapes-Vo car, Mikko finished in 3rd place on drivers championship standing last year. While Mikko is on the outlap we can take a look about the beautiful Melbourne track at the same time. First corner, Jones, is tight right hander taken in 2nd or 3rd gear and about 120kph. Corner looks to be easier than actually is, hard braking from 300kph and it's important to get the car with good line in and not to go on the grass on the outside as we have seen many time in the past. Turn 2 Brabham is flat out left hander right after then turn 1, up the gears to top gear and speed gets up to approximately 280kph. Hard on the brakes again to turn 3 taken in 2nd and speed is about 120kph, short straight to turn 4 taken in 2nd or 3rd gear, line here is again very important, aggressively over the inside curb, but don't use the outside curb as you want to get the car as soon as possible to left side of the track as the straight is very short to turn 5. Turn 5, Whiteford, taken in 4th or even in 5th gear, can be taken flat out if driver is brave enough and setup is good. Short straight and over the 1st split time point, hard on the brakes again slightly turning to left on turn6, turn 7 2nd gear right hander "chicane". Quickly to gas and flat out through turn 8, Lauda approaching turn 9 and 10 chicane named Clark taken in 2nd. Very long left hander going up the gears and speed gets up to 300kph again, 2nd split time and into turn 11 taken in 4th or 5th gear about 200kph, right after corner ends turn 12, Waite, is right hander, depending the setup and how the line was on turn 11, turn 12 can be taken flat out, up one gear and to the back straight, good exit is important once again, trough Hill corner, small right kink approaching turn 13, Ascari, this is one of the best overtaking places on this circuit, down from 7th or 6th gear to 2nd and about 120kph, small straight up few gears and then back to 3rd into next right hander, Stewart, quickly up the gears again to turn 15, slowest corner on the circuit, 1st or 2nd gear and speed is down to 80kph. Pitlane entry on the right, building up the speed and again depending the setup issues next and final corner, turn 16, Prost, can be taken nearly flat out, up the gears and over the line to next lap.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 1:

Jakonen

Mapes-VO

Jakonen starts his flying lap, cleanly through first corner and he kicks up the leafs on the track, neatly through turns 3 and 4, now will he take flat out the Whiteford ? I think he did, clean lap so far, he is attacking hard, but not over driving it. 1st split is good 28.657 seconds. Now to the 2nd sector, through Clark chicane no problems there, 2nd split time is 56.049 this is good stuff from the fin. Kicks up the dust on Waite exit, but didn't loose any time there. Through Ascari and Stewart, now into final corners and over the line, lap time 1:25.900 is the mark to beat.

Jakonen Finish Line 1

1:25.900 0.000

Loukasmäki

Mapes-VO

Next car on the track is Jakonen's team mate, fellow fin, Petri Loukasmäki. No problems on turn one, now into slow turn 3 and 4 section in the parking area. Trough Whiteford and he completes the sector one. 28.672, just 0.015 seconds behind his team mate. Hard over curb at Clark, but good exit there into back straight and 2nd sector is 27.470, after 2 sectors he is 0.093 seconds behind, if he gets clean sector 3 he can challenge his team mate for p1. No mistakes and over the line he goes? Lap time is 1:26.431. Jakonen's sector record is 29.851 and Petri set time of 30.289 there, so he lost quite much time on last sector and goes 2nd, 0.531 seconds slower than Jakonen.

Loukasmäki Finish Line 2

1:26.431 +0.531

Irisarri

Phoenix F1

3rd car on the track is light blue & white car, Phoenix F1 driver, Antonio Irisarri, he finished last season in 5th place on drivers championship. He also takes good line trough turn one and heads down to turn 3 and 4. Clean there and flat out on Whiteford, split time is 28.696, he is also right up there, only 0.039 seconds behind leader Jakonen. Though Marina, Lauda and Clark corners and 2nd split is 56.039! he sets new record to 2nd sector and now leads Jakonen by 0.010 seconds, it's still very close and Mikko set good final sector, at least compared to his team mate, what can the Phoenix F1 driver do? Over the line and he takes first place! 1:25.836 and new sector record to 3rd sector also, by 0.064 seconds into lead. Jakonen is now 2nd and Loukasmäki 3rd.

Irisarri Finish Line 1

1:25.836 -0.064

Maple

JTM

Matt Maple and Peter Harding will complete the group one. Maple starts his flying lap in JTM outfit, Maple set some impressive winter test lap times so it's interesting to see what he can do. Mapes-Vo cars hart, the engine, is the famous Honda and some estimates says it could be one of the most powerful engines out there, maybe only the BMW engines which MMC Racing uses has more raw BHP. Irisarri's Phoenix F1 car is powered by French horses from Renault factory, very good BHP and reliability figures also. JTM team uses Ferrari engines, name is really famous and sound is unbelievable. Ferrari has developed their works engine to really match the top engines on BHP and reliability levels also so that department should be ok for Maple. First sector and he is flying, he is pushing really hard and time 28.349 is 0.308 seconds faster than Jakonen did. Maple is also a driver who doesn't know what maybe means, he doesn't take any corner maybe flat out, the takes it flat out. He is completing the 2nd sector and time is 55.513 another sector record for him and he is now 0.536 seconds in front of Jakonen. Jakonen had good last sector, fastest so far, can Maple beat him there too? Over the line and answer is yes he can, 3rd sector record and lap time 1:25.327 is 0.574 seconds faster than Jakonen and Maple goes to p1, that lap time should get Maple to good position on the grid, but what is his pit stop strategy, car was looking really good on fast corners, so either the balance is superb or he might be on low fuel and on 3 stops strategy, we have to wait till race day to find out.

Maple Finish Line 1

1:25.327 -0.574

Harding

SCUM

Now while Maple leads, Harding is starting his qualifying lap on his SCUM Holder car. Harding shared the 12th place on drivers championship standings with Maple last year. First split time 28.999, oh not so promising for him as he is 0.650 seconds slower than Maple was, we have to wait and see what happens on 2nd sector, he might be on different strategy as well so that could explain the time difference. 2nd sector and he has lost more time 56.772 is 1.259 seconds down on Maple's time and slowest so far, if he loses another 0.5?0.6 seconds on final sector he is close to 1min27 barrier. Over the line and time is 1:26.972 and he goes to 5th 1.645 seconds slower than p1 holder Matt Maple.

Harding Finish Line 5

1:26.972 +1.645

That was the first group of five cars and order is: Maple, Irisarri, Jakonen, Loukasmäki and Harding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd group: Lock, Ponissi, McConkey, Hunt and Whiteman.

Lock

JTM

2nd JTM driver starts his flying lap, car number 12, driven by Toby Lock, he finished in 14th place last season. Maple did superb lap, what can Toby do? Small lock up to turn 3 but no drama as he gets the car in nicely, not sure did he take the Whiteford corner flat out, I think he did, over the 1st split time point and time is 28.691, that's 0.342 seconds slower than Maple did, but he is close with Mapes-VO drivers and Irisarri there. 2nd split time 56.004, 0.491 seconds behind Maple after 2 sectors but faster than Jakonen or Irisarri there so this could be 1-2 for JTM dirvers. Over the line and he goes to 4th! Toby lost some time on last sector, maybe a bit wide entry on the 2nd last corner, that could have cost him few tenths of a second. Lap time 1:26.051 is 0.724 seconds slower than current leader Maple did and he goes to 4th place.

Lock Finish Line 4

1:26.051 +0.724

Ponissi

Woods Racing

Willy Ponissi and Woods Racing is next one on flying lap, Willy was 16th on last year championship standings. First sector?clock is ticking and stops to show time of 30.090, he is 1.741 seconds slower than Maple after 1st sector, doesn't look too good for him at the moment. 2nd sector 28.732 and total time after 2/3rd of a lap completed 58.822, that's over 3.3 seconds slower than leaders. No mistakes on last sector either, clean lap for him, but lap time is 1:30.370, Toyota might be a bit down on BHP, but 5.044 seconds gap to Maple means he was definitely driving on heavy car.

Ponissi Finish Line 7

1:30.370 +5.044

McConkey

MMC Racing

Next driver is Ryan McConkey, he topped several times the winter test lap time sheets and hopes for good results in that team is on top I'm sure. McConkey starts his flying lap and he is fast, can he match Maple's sector time? Almost, he is only 0.027 behind after sector one now to Lauda curve, then to Clark and let the BMW power do it's job heading down to 2nd sector point, 55.796, he has lost some time and is now 0.283 seconds down to Maple's time, but he is clearly 2nd fastest so far. Ascari, Stewart and now trough Prost corners and over the line? lap time 1:25.796 and he does to 2nd, but 0.419 seconds slower than Maple. So Maple holds the sector records for all three sector so far.

McConkey Finish Line 2

1:25.796 +0.419

Hunt

SCUM

After McConkey is Matt Hunt's turn on SCUM Holden car, 5th driver on today's qualifying session was Hunt's team mate Peter Harding, he is in 7th place at the moment. Hunt starts his flying lap, trough Jones and Brabham cleanly, down to turn 3 and 4, no mistakes there, now trough Whiteford and 1st sector is 28.931, 0.582 seconds slower than Maple but a bit faster than Harding there. 2nd sector, 56.195, he is now 0.682 seconds slower than Maple, but over half of a seconds in front of his team mate. No problems at Ascari or Stewart corners, trough Prost corner and over the line, lap time 1:26.195 is good for 5th at the moment 0.868 slower than p1 holder Matt Maple and only 0.144 seconds slower than Toby Lock.

Hunt Finish Line 5

1:26.195 +0.868

Whiteman

EIRE

One driver to go on this group two Scott Whiteman on Eire Jaguar outfit. Scott starts his flying lap. Also he handles his car through tricky first corner nicely and completes the 1st sector in time of 28.463 seconds, he is 3rd fastest there and only 0.114 seconds behind leader Maple. Now to 2nd sector with 2 hard breakings into 2nd gear corners, over the line to complete the 2nd sector and time is 55.769, 0.256 seconds behind Maple, but faster than McConkey who is 2nd at the moment. Ascari, Stewart and Prost corners now behind and over the line to complete his qualifying lap. And he goes to 2nd place, 1:25.492 is 0.166 seconds slower than Maple's lap time so he takes now the 3rd sector record from Maple who holds still the 1st and 2nd sector records.

Whiteman Finish Line 2

1:25.492 +0.166

Whiteman was last driver on group 2 and order after 10 cars is: Maple, Whiteman, McConkey, Irisarri, Jakonen, Lock, Hunt, Loukasmäki, Harding and Ponissi. Still 12 cars to go, we will be back after this short break, don't go away?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back to follow Australian Grand Prix qualifying, with 12 cars to go, Maple holds the p1 at the moment.

Group 3 has 6 cars and drivers we see at the track are Loram, Fretter, Sleight, Mihailovic, Forausberger and Aparicio

Loram

EIRE

Ross Loram starts his flying lap on EIRE Jaguar, his team mate Scott Whiteman is currently on 2nd place, so what can Loram do on his lap?

Over the line to complete the first sector and clock stops to show 28.961, humm, I'm not too impressed with that time he is 0.612 seconds behind Maple and nearly 0.5 slower than Whiteman was, but what he can do on 2nd sector, at least he takes good line trough Marina corner and no mistakes on Clark either, over the line and 56.235, this was much better sector for him, maybe he took some wide line on sector one or had to lift off on Whiteford corner who know, but now he is 0.722 seconds behind Maple and actually his 2nd sector was faster than Whiteman's, if he can hold on same kind of speed also at final sector he could Lock's 6th place. Over the line goes the EIRE driver, lap time is 1:26.757, he lost bunch of time on last sector and goes to 9th place, but wait! He is in trouble, he pulls off the track in to grass just after the pitlane exit. I'm not sure but I think if driver fails to do in lap to enter the parc ferme his qualifying lap will be disqualified.

Loram Finish Line 9

1:26.757 +1.430

Fretter

Phoenix F1

No red flag as Loram parks his car nicely into grass and Fretter can start his flying lap normally. The light blue & white Phoenix F1 car goes over the line to start the lap. Small lock-up on turn one, but keeps the car on track, now trough turns 3 and 4, can we hear the engine sound trough Whiteford corner? yes he had to lift his foot from gas there, over the line and sector time shows it, 30.232 is slowest there so far +1.883 seconds, he has to really fight with the car under braking to turn 6. Small lock up again on Clark chicane and over the 2nd sector, sector time 29.445 is over 2 seconds slower than Maple did and he is now 4.164 seconds behind the leader, this is slowest lap so far. Loads of understeer on turns 11 and 12. Over the line to complete the lap? 1:31.204 and he goes to 12th place 5.963 seconds slower than leader Matt Maple, but we have to remember Loram's lap might be disqualified. Fretter's car looked to be very heavy or he has some serious trouble with the setup, car just didn't want to turn in to corners.

Fretter Finish Line 12

1:31.204 +5.963

Sleight

MMC Racing

Next driver is Paul Sleight and MMC Racing BMW outfit. Team mate McConkey is currently on 3rd place. Cleanly trough turn one. No problems at turns 3 or 4 either for Paul, this looks to be good sector one for him and yes it is 28.516 that's 0.167 seconds behind current leader Maple. Very good line trough turns 6 and 7, very early on the gas, now hard on the brakes to Clark chicane, cars is very nicely balanced and Paul uses every centimeter of the track very wisely. Good exit and over the line 55.591, new sector record from him, but he still trails by 0.078 seconds to Maple, but he is 2nd quickest so far. This is now up to 3rd sector, how well can he take it? Can he beat Maple for 1st place? No problems at Ascari or Stewart corners, good line trough the Prost curve and good exit to start finish straight, this will be close, can he drop JTM driver from p1? Yes he can, new fastest lap time is 1:25.241 and he is 0.086 seconds quicker than Maple and takes the 1st place, great lap from the MMC Racing driver. He was behind after first sector, but great 2nd and last sector got him the fastest lap so far can he hold on till the end?

Sleight Finish Line 1

1:25.241 -0.086

Mihailovic

MMRT

Miodrag Mihailovic starts his flying lap on MMRT Mercedes outfit. Sector one, 28.965, he is 0.449 seconds behind new leader Sleight and fighting with Loram and Harding. Loram is currently in 10th place. Sector two 57.218 and gap is now up to 1.627 seconds, this still could be low 1m27 for him if he can hold on at last sector also. Over the line and Mihailovic goes to 12th place, lap time 1:27.379 is 2.138 seconds slower than leader Sleight's lap time.

Mihailovic Finish Line 12

1:27.379 +2.138

Forausberger

MMRT

Group 3 has still 2 driver to go, Forausberger and Aparicio. Cristian Forausberger starts flying lap on 2nd MMRT Mercedes car, team mate Mihailovic is cruising down on his in lap to parc ferme and is currently on 12th place, what can the Belgian driver do on his qualifying lap. Sector one 29.281, he is 0.765 seconds slower than Sleight who is quickest, Maple still holds the sector record and he was 0.167 seconds faster then Sleight. Small lock on the Clark chicane braking, but not too bad trough there, over the 2nd split time point, 57.657, gap is now up to 2.066 seconds and he is over 4 tenths behind his team mate. Final sector, final corners, no drama and over the line he goes stopping the clocks to 1:28.801, that's 3.560 seconds slower then Sleight and good for 14th place.

Forausberger Finish Line 14

1:28.801 +3.560

Aparicio

Simsoa

Javier Aparicio driving the Simsoa Cosworth outfit will complete the 3rd group and will be 16th car completing the Australian Grand Prix qualifying. First corner and small amount of dirt and dust gets kicked up in the air as Javier uses the whole track and a bit more. Hard braking into turn 3 and trough turn 4 and turn 5, Whiteford, to complete the 1st sector. Time 29.368 is 0.852 seconds slower than leader Sleights time there. Trough Marina, Lauda and Clark chicane without problems and 2nd split time is 57.649 and he is now 2.058 seconds down on leader and fraction faster than Forausberger. Final corners and over the line he goes, lap time 1:28.388 and he splits the two MMRT driver and goes to 14th place being 3.560 seconds slower than leader Sleight.

Aparicio Finish Line 14

1:28.388 +3.147

That was last car on group 3 and 6 driver are still on the pits waiting their turn, Sleight leads, Maple, Whiteman, McConkey, Irisarri and Jakonen completes the top-6.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 4, last 6 drivers, Brown, Elencevski, Koski, Goodley, Wagner and Liolias.

Brown

Simsoa

David Brown and 2nd of Simsoa cars is ready to start his flying lap. Team mate Aparicio took 14th place where does Brown end up on the grid, we will find out that on next one minute and 30 seconds. No problems on first sector so far as he goes over the line, 29.294 that's 0.778 seconds slower than leader Sleight's time there and slightly faster than Aparicio did. 2nd sector goes cleanly as well and time 57.220 is good as he is 1.629 seconds behind leader after 2 sector and over 0.4 seconds in front of his team mate. Final corners and good exit from Prost corner to cross the line in time of 1:27.338 and he goes to 13th place 2.097 seconds slower than leader Sleight.

Brown Finish Line 13

1:27.338 +2.097

Elencevski

FinOz Racing

Next driver is Steve Elencevski who won IGPC drivers title in style and did series of unbelievable lap times on winter testing driving FinOz Racing Ferrari. FinOz Racing uses customer Ferrari engines and they have been complaining lack of BHP and straight line speed due that, but both driver Elencevski and Koski has impressed many team managers and media over the F1VWC winter testing. It will be interesting to see what Steve can do on his qualifying lap. He is driving on the limit, but keeps it clean trough turns 3 and 4, flat out trough turn 5 and completes the 1st sector on 28.629 and he is only 0.113 seconds behind leader Sleight. Now into 2nd sector and what we see? Brown is going very slowly on the right side of the track, does he have a problem? Steve passes him cleanly, no problem there, but what has happened to Brown? Now the director cuts back to Steve as he completes the 2nd sector 56.189, Steve has lost some time, he is now 0.598 seconds behind, but this is good stuff from the Aussie still. Final corner and no drama there, over the line? 1:26.037, good lap from as he goes to 7th place 0.796 seconds slower than Sleight and in front of JTM driver Lock with more powerful Ferrari engine, FinOz team looks to be happy for this. Director finds the Simsoa car of Brown climbing out of the cockpit! He is somewhere on the side of the track and can't make it back to the pits, this is like what happened to Loram earlier and indeed during the commercial break I heard that if driver fails to get back to the pit lane his lap time will be disqualified, so it doesn't look too good for Loram or Brown.

Elencevski Finish Line 7

1:26.037 +0.796

Koski

FinOz Racing

Four drivers to go, Koski, Goodley, Wagner and Liolias to complete this qualifying session, but wait, where is Koski? He has just passed the 2nd sector point on his out lap, I think he should be much closer to Elencevski. Driver has 30 seconds to start his out lap after previous driver has started his qualifying lap, so when Steve crossed the line to start his flying lap, Kari had 30 seconds time to exit the pit lane. Now we see some replay from the pits and green light changes to red and Koski is still on the pit road, he was late on entering the track, not much just few seconds, but red light was on when Kari entered the track, this is disaster for him. Will Kari come back to the pit lane or? now he is building up the speed and starts his flying lap, I didn't see any black flag on the line, so we have to wait and see what happens, but running on red light can't be good, was there fault on the timer and red light went on too early or was FinOz late sending Kari out? we will hear it after the qualifying, let's see first what the fin can do on the track. 1st split 28.854, it's a decent one, not the best, but good, 0.338 seconds behind Sleight. 2nd sector, he is keeping it clean, 56.385, quite much understeer on turn 12 and nearly running of the track, 0.794 seconds off Sleights sector time. Few corners to go and over the line he goes? 1:26.844, that's 1.603 seconds slower than pole sitter Sleight's lap time and he goes to 11th place, but will he keep that place?

Koski Finish Line 11

1:26.844 +1.603

Goodley

Woods Racing

Chris Goodley was in time on track and he is already on final corners building up the speed to start his flying lap on Woods Racing Toyota. Oh, he locks up the front right tire braking into turn 3, that can cost him some time. First sector time? 29.104, that's 0.588 seconds slower than Sleight's time hard to say did the lock-up cost any time, we have to wait 2nd sector and see what the gap is then. No mistakes on 2nd sector and clean exit from Clark chicane, 57.018 and gap is now 1.427 seconds, but he is faster than Forausberger and Mihailovic which were faster than him on sector one, this could get Goodley up to around 13th or 14th place. Clean last sector, only that one lock-up on turn 3, over the line 1:27.291, that's 2.050 seconds slower then leader Sleight's lap time and he goes to 14th place at the moment, but Loram and Koski might be disqualified so that would be 12th place for the Woods Racing driver.

Goodley Finish Line 14

1:27.291 +2.050

Wagner

Puma F1

2 drivers to go, Andreas Wagner on Puma F1 Porsche, and his team mate Marek Liolias. Puma F1 team is the latest team entered the series and they really struggling with the Porsche engine, some estimates says they would have disadvantage nearly 60 bhp to top engines. Let's see what they can do. First sector time is 29.307, that's a decent one I would say 0.791 seconds off Sleight's pole time. 2nd sector is almost over for him as he accelerates out of Clark chicane. After 2nd sector gap is up to 1.527 seconds to leader, he is in front of Mihailovic who is currently 15th. Last corners and no mistakes there or how the exit of Prost corner goes, he gets the car on the curb, oh he is over the curb, left side tires are on grass, curb ends and car gets punched into air, grass and dirt is flying everywhere, Wagner fights the car back to track and crosses the line, that was close one. He nearly lost it to wall, but in the other hand he did superb job to get it back to track, lap time 1:28.309, that's 3.068 seconds slower the pole position time, I'm sure that mistake on last corner cost him maybe a seconds or even more. Now it's interesting to see if there any damage on the car, oh yes, you can see clearly that the under tray of the car is damage under the cockpit and also left side "wing" is hanging loose.

Wagner Finish Line 16

1:28.309 +3.068

Liolias

Puma F1

One driver to go, will Sleight take first pole of the season? Or can Marek Liolias pull out something huge on his Puma F1 car. First sector 29.800 that's 1.284 seconds off Sleights time, so it's pole position for MMC Racing driver, Maple will take 2nd and Scott Whiteman will be the 3rd man on press conference, but let's now follow what place Liolias takes, 2nd sector 58.065, 2.474 off pole time, could be somewhere around 15th place maybe?, final corner for him and hopefully he keeps in on the track, yes he does and over the line he goes, 1:29.091 that's 20th place for him 3.850 seconds slower than Sleight who takes the pole position for Australian Grand Prix. Meanwhile in the pit lane I can see Andreas Wagner driving into Puma F1 garage, not to the official parc ferme, maybe the team wants to get the car to garage to investigate the damage rather than going to parc ferme and try to repair the car there.

Liolias Finish Line 20

1:29.091 +3.850

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

Next we hear thoughts from top-3 from today's qualifying session Paul Sleight, Matt Maple and Scott Whiteman from post-qualifying press conference but before that we get the results from the qualifying. Sleight, Maple, Whiteman, McConkey, Irisarri, Jakonen, Elencevski? none of the team dominated this qualifying session and 4 Bridgestone users on top 10 and 6 Michelins so quite evenly matched. Loukasmäki is the first on page 2, then there is Harding, no Loram or Koski, Goodley, Mihailovic, Aparicio, so also Brown missing on that list? 18 names on the results with Adam Fretter last. 3rd page, Disqualified times, Ross Loram, Kari Koski, David Brown and Andreas Wagner as Puma F1 took the car straight into their pit box and Wagner didn't go to parc ferme at all. So some hot shots on the back of the grid, what are the tactics on top drivers? Weather should be nice and sunny for the race day? It's early wake up again tomorrow for Europeans, but I'm sure it's worth it.
