As the 22 drivers lined up on the grid, to take part in the final race of the season at Brazil, car no. 2 Kieran Ryan's SCUM Holden began to smoke, but strangely enough the smoke disappeared before the lights went out:

"The car was acting strange. Once we all went out for a preliminary laps before lining up on the grid the car just felt strange, no detectable problem with it, just a strange problem seemed to occur. I told the guys about it and they plugged the laptops into the car but could find no plausable explanation.

I took the grid anyway and hoped the problem would go away but by lap 11, just before I came in for my pitstop the car just ceased up and forced me into a spin which ended in the barriers. We think it may have been an engine related problem, which would cause the rear wheels to lock but we're not sure.

It's a sad way to finish the season. I was running well up in the early stages and the rain while tricky was still fun to drive in. I really think I could have challanged for a podium but just not ment to be obviously. It's not a great way to end a good season for me or not even a fitting farewell to the team but how and ever nothing could have been done. I will now take some time off and simply enjoy not racing for a little while. Then I'm sure I'll be called in for some Phoenix related activity so it'll all begin again.

I just also want to congratulate Mikko Jakonen on his 2nd world championship. Well done!"

It was also a sad day for the SCUM team with Peter Harding apparently driving in his last race before retirement. "Rab" is one of the few drivers remaining from the GPVWC 2002 days.
